How to Use a Pain Relief Balm Correctly: 7 Mistakes to Avoid

A pain relief balm is simple to use, but a few small habits make a big difference to how well it works, and how safe it is. Here are seven common mistakes, and what to do instead.

1. Using too much

More balm doesn't mean more relief. A thick layer just sits on the skin and can feel too strong. Instead: take a small, pea-sized amount and add a little more only if you need it for a larger area.

2. Just dabbing it on

Much of the comfort comes from the massage itself. Instead: rub it in with slow, firm circles for 1–2 minutes until it's fully absorbed.

3. Applying it to broken or irritated skin

Cuts, scratches, rashes or freshly shaved skin can sting and react. Instead: only apply to clean, dry, unbroken skin.

4. Covering it with heat or a tight bandage

Trapping heat over ingredients like menthol, wintergreen and capsicum can irritate or burn the skin. Instead: leave the area uncovered, or wear loose clothing. Don't use a heating pad or hot water bottle on the same spot.

5. Forgetting to wash your hands

Touching your eyes, nose or lips after applying a balm is very uncomfortable. Instead: wash your hands with soap straight after, unless you're treating your hands.

6. Using it more often than directed

Instead: follow the label. For PainGo, that's up to 3 times a day.

7. Ignoring pain that isn't getting better

Balms are for everyday aches, not a replacement for proper care. Instead: see a doctor if pain is severe, follows an injury, comes with swelling, numbness or fever, or lasts more than a few weeks.

A few extra safety tips

  • Do a patch test on a small area the first time you use any new balm.
  • Keep balms out of reach of children, and check with a doctor before using them on a child.
  • If you are pregnant, allergic to aspirin, or take blood thinners, ask a doctor before using a balm that contains wintergreen (methyl salicylate).
  • Close the lid tightly and store in a cool place, away from direct sunlight.
